Aluminium Fencing
Pool barriers and boundary fencing that won't corrode near the water
Aluminium Fencing for Birkdale and the Redlands
Aluminium is the material we install most around pools, and on the bayside that comes down to chemistry. Aluminium doesn't rust. Steel does, and chlorinated water plus salt-laden air is about the worst combination you can put a steel fence in. A tubular aluminium pool barrier at Raby Bay or Wellington Point will still look right in fifteen years with nothing done to it but a hose-down.
The thing worth knowing is that "aluminium" on a quote doesn't tell you much. The panels are the easy part; the fixings, hinges, latches and post inserts are where cheap jobs fail. Within sight of the water we specify 316 marine-grade stainless hardware rather than 304, because 304 starts pitting within a few seasons in salt air and then you're replacing hinges on a fence that's otherwise perfect. We also use a marine-grade powder coat rather than standard where the exposure warrants it.
Beyond pools, aluminium does a lot of work out here as front fencing. Flat-top and blade-style panels between rendered piers have become the standard look on new builds through Thornlands and Victoria Point, and slat panels give you privacy at street level without the mass of a solid fence. It's lighter than steel, which makes wide gates practical, and it'll never need painting.
What Aluminium Gets You
- Will not rust, which is the whole argument near the bay
- Compliant pool barriers under AS1926.1
- You can see through it, so the pool and the yard stay supervised
- No painting, oiling or sealing, ever
- Light enough for wide driveway gates without sagging
- Powder-coat colour range that matches Colorbond boundaries
- Panels can be replaced individually if one gets damaged
Styles We Install
Where We Install It
- Pool barriers across Birkdale, Cleveland, Raby Bay and Victoria Point
- Front fencing between rendered or brick piers
- Waterfront and canal-side boundaries where steel corrodes
- Deck, stair and balcony balustrades
- Wide driveway gates where weight is a problem
- Garden and courtyard dividers on compact blocks
Common Questions
Does the hardware grade really matter near the water?
It's the single biggest difference between a cheap aluminium quote and ours. The panels won't corrode either way, but 304 stainless hinges, latches and fixings pit and seize in salt air, sometimes within two or three years. We use 316 marine grade on jobs near the bay. You'll never see it on the finished fence, and you'll notice it when the gate still swings properly a decade later.
Will my pool fence pass council inspection?
That's the standard we build to. AS1926.1 covers minimum 1.2m effective height, gaps under 100mm, a 900mm non-climbable zone clear of footholds, and a gate that self-closes and self-latches from any position. The common failure we're called out to fix is something inside the zone, like a pot, a tap or a retaining wall edge, giving a child a step up. We flag those on the site visit.
Aluminium or glass for a pool?
Glass disappears, which is why people choose it, and it costs more. Aluminium is substantially cheaper, handles sloping and uneven surrounds far better because panels can be raked, and still lets you see the pool. If the pool surround has a noticeable fall, aluminium is often the better answer regardless of budget. Have a look at our glass fencing page to compare.
Can it follow a sloping site?
Yes. Raked panels are made with the rails on an angle so the fence follows the ground line with no gaps at the bottom. This is a real advantage over both Colorbond and glass. We measure the fall on site and order the panels raked to match rather than stepping them.
How strong is it compared to steel?
Plenty strong for residential fencing, pool barriers and gates. Steel wins on raw impact resistance, so for a security fence on a commercial yard we'd specify steel. For a house, a pool or a front boundary, aluminium's strength is not the limiting factor and its corrosion resistance is worth far more out here.
What maintenance does it need?
Hose it down when it looks dusty. If you're close to the water, give the hinges and latches a fresh-water rinse every few months to clear salt, and a drop of lubricant on the gate hardware once a year. That's the full list. No sanding, no repainting, no rust treatment.
